TEDX DOHA - WOMEN TED
Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani addressed the first TEDWomen conference in Washington, DC via satellite from Doha, in front of a packed ballroom Sheraton Doha ballroom on Wednesday, 8 December.
One of only two speakers globally to address the first-ever TEDWomen, Sheikha Mayassa discussed the importance of culture and heritage in the Arab world and the role empowered Arab women play in today’s society.
Her Excellency participated in a session entitled “Harmony and Discord: The role Women play in peace and security,” hosted and moderated by Pat Mitchell, President and CEO of New York’s Paley Center for Media. More than 450 people attended the event in Doha while another 900 looked on from TEDWomen’s auditorium at the International Trade Centre in Washington, DC.
In addition to Her Excellency’s talk, the audience were also treated to talks from: Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Jody Williams; journalist Naomi Klein; Indian corrections officer Kiran Bedi; and philanthropist Jacqueline Novogrotz.
This special TEDxDoha event for TEDWomen was held just six weeks after the inaugural TEDxDoha event, “Fun and Important,” which was viewed by an audience of more than 800 at Qatar’s new new “Cultural Village”, Katara on October 29th.
DFI will present more TEDxDoha events in 2011. Be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook, as well keeping an eye on this home page, for details of future events.
